Parkville’s use tax proposal goes down to defeat

arkville’s use tax proposal, which city leaders said would have brought in about $38,000 in tax paid on out of state purchases made by city residents, was defeated at Tuesday’s election by a margin of 10 votes.

Final count was 387 opposed, 377 in favor.

The use tax would have allowed the city to collect sales tax on purchases of $2,000 or more made out-of-state on items such as cars, boats, motor homes, etc.

There was one contested race on Parkville’s Board of Aldermen. Incumbent Diane Driver defeated Nick Casale 84-66.

PLATTE CITY

Ron Stone did not seek relection on the Platte City Board of Aldermen in Ward 1. His spot will now be taken by Vickie Atkins, who defeated Lee Roy Van Lew 66-42.

Other spots on the Platte City board were won by the incumbents. Ron Porter held on to his position in Ward 2 by defeating David Ray 84-41.

In Ward 3, incumbent John Higgins defeated challenger Susan Peck 99-48.

WESTON

Incumbent Weston mayor Carlen Carter easily defeated Becky Roebling to win reelection, with 430 for Carter and 134 for Roebling, a margin of 76% to 24%.

In Ward 1 on the Weston Board of Aldermen, Kent Stelljes defeated Scott Low 168 to 97. In Ward 2, incumbent Tim Hill edged June Kisker 134 to 131. Patrick Raney also ran, with 39 votes.

RIVERSIDE

Mike Fuller topped Cindy Ecton for the Ward 1 seat on the Riverside Board of Aldermen by a count of 89 to 38.

In Ward 2 at Riverside, Aaron Thatcher defeated Nicholas Welliver 63-14.
